Welcome to Shim’s lab!

Greetings😀. I am Prof. Won-Sik Shim at College of Pharmacy, Gachon University, South Korea.
My lab is located in a city Incheon, and you can find more about the location in Google maps here.

As the name of the lab suggests, we are specifically interested in neuromolecular mechanisms of itch. Even though we all know what is itch, it is surprisingly unknown how the sensation is initiated and/or transmitted. We are greatly interested in elucidating mechanisms of itch in various itch-related diseases such as atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, dry skin conditions, allergic reactions, and even systemic diseases such as cholestasis! Technically, we take advantage of various skills from molecular biology, cell biology, fluorescent-based microscopy, electrophysiology, animal behavior experiments and many more.

As I have been in the field of itch more than decades, I have published numerous scientific articles about itch. For complete list of my publication, please click the link here.

The coursework for the master course will take 2 years, and the student will have an opportunity to publish a scientific article by the time near graduation. The student will have a full scholarship for entire semesters, plus monthly fees from me to sustain your living here.

You are eligible to apply for the position if you have

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited university (4 years) OR equivalent
  • English Language Proficiency Test Score
    (TOEFL PBT 530 / CBT 197 / iBT 71 / IELTS 5.5 / CEFR B2 / TEPS 600 / NEW TEPS 326 or above)

If you are interested in, feel free to send me a brief email your CV to wsshim@gachon.ac.kr. I will then arrange an online interview with Zoom. Only the applicant who qualifies the criteria will proceed to the actual application, so please just contact me first without too much thinking!

Here in College of Pharmacy at Gachon University, there already are many international graduate students who devoted themselves in research. Vibrant local international communities will help your stay here. Most importantly, I will be your best guide to supervise not only in research but also your adaptation to Korea as soon as possible.

That’s all, folks! Now just send me an email to wsshim@gachon.ac.kr! I will be expecting your contact. Thanks.
